¡¡¡¡HEFEI, Aug. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Typhoon Matsa has killed one person and
affected the life of 760,000 people in east China's Anhui Province, the
provincial flood control authorities said Sunday.
¡¡¡¡The ninth typhoon of the year has brought moderate to heavy rain to Anhui
Province si
nce it started to hit the southern part of the province at 10:00 p.m.
Saturday.
¡¡¡¡Though the typhoon had trailed off into a tropical storm beforeentering
Anhui Province, the civil affairs department said it was destructive enough to
evacuate 8,600 people and damage 50,000 hectares of cropland, causing 373
million yuan (45 million US dollars) in direct economic losses.
¡¡¡¡The high winds and heavy rain also destroyed dikes in Chuzhou City, said
the local flood control officials Sunday as they were overseeing the repair
work.
¡¡¡¡The latest meteorological report said Matsa is moving northwestward at a
speed of 15 kilometers per hour. High wind and heavy rain will continue to
batter Chuzhou, Bengbu and Suzhou cities and north of Huaihe River.
¡¡¡¡Reports from Qingdao, a coastal city in east China's Shandong Province
Province, said the typhoon will affect Qingdao at around 8:00 p.m. Sunday. The
seaside city has already been slashed by heavy rain and high wind this afternoon
and experts warn that the stormy weather will last until Monday.
¡¡¡¡The city has closed its seaside resorts, stopped yachting services and
called back 30,000 fishing vessels.
¡¡¡¡Affected by the typhoon, the capital city Beijing, still further north, has
also forecast heavy rain Sunday night and Monday.
¡¡¡¡Typhoon Matsa landed east China's Zhejiang Province in the wee hours of
Saturday and has left three deaths, one in Shanghai and two in Zhejiang. Enditem
