New Huiquan Square opens to
public

ayor Xia Geng joined in some 80,000 citizens earlier this week in a ceremony
marking the reopening of the rebuilt Huiquan Square.
City officials attended the opening ceremony for the Square. 4 citizens and a
representative of constructors pushed down the button of opening. Some 80,000
people on the square witnessed the moment.
The rebuilding project is one of the 12 major issues the local government
vowed to do for the people. It¡¯s also the kick off project of the city¡¯s
preparation for 2008 Olympic Sailing Regatta. The project was under construction
since Oct, 2002 and was completed after 1 year and 8 months. The project covers
the rebuilding of No.1 bathing beach, the Gym, a business market, underground
parking area, sports facilities, and road expansion.
Local economy enjoys rapid growth in first half year
Qingdao has implemented the country¡¯s macro control policies during the fist
half of this year and the local reportable enterprises have maintained rapid
growth despite the unfavorable electric power supply and price rising of
resources and row materials; local economy has show a sound development
tendency.
The city¡¯s reportable enterprises have achieved an industrial added value of
41.3 billion Yuan, increasing 26% compared to that of last year; the city saw a
completed sales income valued 147 billion Yuan and realized a 30% increase of
profit tax and profit.
When China carries out its macro control policies the development of the
city¡¯s heavy industry slowed down during the first half of this year, the
increase rate of heavy industry is only 3% higher than that of the light
industry, dropping 10% compared to that of last year. Light and heavy industries
enjoy a more coordinated development. Foreign invested enterprises and
shareholding ones enjoy rapid growth, the achieved added value and economic
benefit accounted for nearly 3 fourths of the city¡¯s total.
During the first half of this year, the city has accelerated the development
of 3 characterized economies, 4 large industrial bases and 5 industrial groups.
Meanwhile Qingdao adjusted its economic structural adjustment and tightened
the relationship between its pillar industries and traditional ones. There were
2680 reportable industrial enterprises in the city by the end of this June, 371
more compared to that of the last year. The export of industrial products also
realized rapid development in the first half of this year
